Samuel F.B. (Finley Breese) Morse invented the original Morse Code in the 1830s. As we know it today, the dots and dashes of Morse Code translate well for slip stitch color patterns, making it easy to write something in your knitting. In Nancy Whitman’s shawl, each broad stripe ends with three lines of Morse Code that repeat a single knitting term. From right to left, the shawl reads Needles, Yarn, Cast On, Knit, Purl, and Bind Off.
